Credit Suisse APAC Volunteers Spark Joy

Kind acts bring joy to Filipino public school students. Last November 22 and 23, 2019 Credit Suisse (CS) employees from Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Philippines volunteered their time and talent at Malaban Elementary School in Biñan, Laguna to forward their mission for education advocacy.
On the morning of their first day with the school community, 20 Credit Suisse Volunteers together with Teach for the Philippines staff facilitated a financial literacy workshop for the students which included a storytelling session and interactive group activities. CS employees shared their expertise as guides for the students in learning about wise spending and saving in everyday life.

In the afternoon, CS volunteers and students went to visit the Museo ni Rizal in Calamba, Laguna, a museum built around the home of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine’s national hero. Unique to their museum experience was a scavenger hunt designed to help the volunteers and students work together to learn more about Rizal’s life and work. Significant phases of Dr. Jose Rizal’s life were narrated through different areas of the museum where TFP “Game Masters” took post to deliver the challenges. Moving from one riddle to the next, the volunteers and students raced to complete a puzzle forming the picture of Rizal.

The next day, Credit Suisse volunteers went back to Malaban Elementary School for an activity with Renovate to Educate (rED). rED is an organization dedicated to “reconstructing” the classroom experience through renovation projects to meet the infrastructure needs of public schools. Together with volunteers from rED, CS employees built bookshelves and repainted exterior structures of the school.

After a busy morning of hard work, Credit Suisse volunteers sat down for a bountiful Filipino lunch with the rED team and school community. CS employees also donated pens, notebooks, soaps, and 2 LCD projectors to Malaban Elementary School in addition to their volunteerism.

To say thank you, the students who joined the learning activities on Day 1 wrote letters to each CS volunteer, spreading the joy felt by the students and reinforcing Credit Suisse’ tradition of employee volunteerism.

School principal Ms. Nenette Lacuarin expressed her gratitude towards the CS employees by sharing how their generosity and act of service will enhance the learning environment and experience for the students.
